Dragons highest area seed for boys

Only one of the 11 area varsity boys basketball teams came home from its respective tournament draw with a top-four seed Sunday.

Coach Rob Pisano’s Lakeside Dragons (13-3) are the No. 3 seed at the Euclid sectional-district tournament.

Geneva (7-11), Madison (4-14) and Riverside (4-13) are seeded ninth, 11th and 12th, respectively at Euclid.

The Dragons will face a familiar foe in a sectional semifinal March 2 in sixth-seeded North (9-8), which Lakeside just defeated, 54-49, in a Premier Athletic Conference clash Friday night at Lakeside Gymnasium.

The winner of that contest will meet coach John Marhefka’s Geneva squad March 6 for a sectional championship.

Coach Pat Moran’s Madison Blue Streaks will play eighth-seeded Glenville in a sectional semifinal March 1, while coach Rick Durkovic’s Riverside Beavers drew a first-round matchup with top-seeded and state-ranked Mentor (15-2) in a sectional semifinal March 3.

Brush and Shaw (10-5) are the second and fourth seeds, while Solon (10-7) is fifth, Mayfield seventh and South (5-14) is 10th.

In the Lakeland Division II tournament, Edgewood (9-7) earned the highest seed — sixth — while area squads Conneaut (8-9), Perry (5-12) and Jefferson (4-12) received the ninth, 11th and 13th seeds, respectively.

Coach Kevin Andrejack’s Warriors will play seventh-seeded West Geauga (8-9) in a sectional semifinal March 1.

Coach Tim Tallbacka’s Spartans (8-9) will tangle with 12th-seeded Cleveland East (4-12) in a sectional semifinal Feb. 26, with the winner moving on to a sectional final against third-seeded Lake Catholic (11-5) on March 2.

Coach Chad Frazier’s Pirates (5-12) and coach Steve Locy’s Falcons (4-12) — who will play a regular-season game Tuesday night in Falcon Gymnasium — will match up in a sectional semifinal Feb. 26.

The top seed at Lakeland is Collinwood (13-5), while John Hay (12-5) is seeded second and Harvey (9-8) fourth.

Rounding out the seeds there are East Tech at five, Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (7-9) at eight and Beachwood (8-10) is 10th.

In Division III action at Howland, the area’s two representatives — Grand Valley and Pymatuning Valley — are seeded sixth and seventh, respectively, and, you guessed it, will play in a sectional semifinal on March 1.

The winner between coach Luke Strohm’s Mustangs (11-7) and coach Ryan Fitch’s Lakers (11-6) will move on to tangle with third-seeded Berkshire (12-5) in a sectional championship game March 5.

Newton Falls (15-3), LaBrae (12-6), Brookfield (9-7) and Cardinal (11-6) round out the top five seeds.

The rest of the field includes Mineral Ridge (6-11), Girard (4-13), Champion (4-13), Lakeview (3-15), Liberty (4-15) and winless Garfield (0-16) at eight through 13.

In Division IV play, SS. John and Paul will play Windham in a sectional semifinal in Warren.

Coach Tom Penna’s 14th-seeded Heralds (1-15) and the fifth-seeded Bombers (7-9) will tangle March 2.

Mathews (14-2), Maplewood (13-4), Bloomfield (12-4), and Mogadore (9-7) are the top seeds at the tournament.

Rounding out the six through 13 seeds are Lordstown (6-10), Bristol (5-12), Newbury (5-12), Southington (4-13), Warren JFK (2-15), Ledgemont (2-15), Badger (1-15) and Fairport (1-16).

Brackets for all four tournaments will appear this week.

It would seem only fitting that the first foray onto the turf for the 2010 season for the Ohio State Buckeyes football team would be billed, “The Shootout at Ohio Stadium.”

Mitchel Hokavar has been a key component of the Perry Pirates football team for two seasons already. If his performance in Game 1 of the 2010 season is any indication, he’s doing a fine job of playing a game of Can You Top This? with himself.
