Youngsters flocking to camp

Schulte: Response to free event of Meyer and Hood off the charts

— The response to the first Urban Meyer-Dean Hood Youth Football Camp has been off the charts, but then again, not surprising to Dana Schulte.

As the head of Media One Group radio, Schulte could not be happier with the response to the Meyer-Hood camp, which is free of charge and is for all players going into eighth grade or younger and will be held Thursday, July 5 at Spire Institute in Harpersfield Township.

“We have more than 200 sign up for the camp in the first 18 hours,” he said.  “We couldn’t believe how fast the signups came in... and people are still calling the station.

“The ‘buzz’ is definitely out there.”

As a man who grew up in Ashtabula with the likes of Meyer and Hood, Schulte can appreciate how youngsters in this area would be excited to have an opportunity to work with such coaching luminaries, especially considering they cut their teeth right here in Ashtabula County.

“It is amazing that we have three or four high-profile coaches from Ashtabula — Dean, Urban, Jim Bollman and Bob Frey.

“Just like training, sports-performance training as come a long way.”

Schulte was a start quarterback at Harbor, where his favorite target was Hood, who was a standout tight end. Bollman was also a fine player at Harbor, while Meyer and Frey — who is now at Kansas Wesleyan University —  were stars at St. John and Edgewood, respectively.

“We laugh at the way we used to train,” Schulte said. “We lifted and ran every day and never thought of a supplement or considered that we were over training.”

Parents can register their youngsters for the camp online at www.ESPN970WFUN.com.

  • Alex Give him an Oscar!

For the first three years of his football career with the Grand Valley Mustangs, offensive lineman Alex Oscar said he viewed playing football as more of a job than a fun sport to play.
Then, during his senior year, the Mustangs finished 7-3 and won a Northeastern Athletic Conference title under first-year coach John Glavickas and Oscar suddenly started viewing the game as fun again.

Then again, odds are, he wasn’t around to blow out the candles at such an age, but no one is sure.
For while we know James Joseph Burns was born on June 2, 1876 in Ashtabula, there is no record of his death.
