Sandlot Roundup: Lexi zaps County All-Stars


Lexi Zappitelli recorded all 12 outs with strikeouts in a four-inning no-hitter and also pounded out four hits, including a double, scored three runs and drove in two runs to lead Conneaut’s 10-11 softball team to an 18-0 victory Wednesday over Ashtabula County.

An 11-run first inning was all Conneaut needed for the win as Brenna Nelson blasted an inside-the-park homer among four hits, drove in four runs and scored four more. Emily Lower had a two-run inside-the-park homer among two hits and scored three runs, while Michelle Tisdale had two hits and two RBI and Alyssa Bennett added two hits to a 17-hit attack and scored twice.

Josh Bleil threw a two-hitter and his teammates exploded for 12 runs in the third inning of Ashtabula’s 19-0 win over Madison. Alec Graeb had four hits and four RBI, Seth Tackett belted a three-run homer and drove in four runs, Bryce Tome had three hits and three RBI and Sam Chaney and Alex Wisnyai each drove in two runs.

Ashtabula will host Geneva, a 9-0 winner over Madison, in the championship round Friday at 6 p.m. at Cederquist Park. If necessary, a second game would be back at Cederquist on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the winner going to the state tournament Aug. 1 in Chesapeake.

After its 10-0 win over Painesville, Jefferson will travel of Madison on Friday at 6 p.m. in the championship round. If necessary, a decisive game will be played Sunday at 2 p.m. at Madison with the winner advancing to the state tournament Aug. 1 at Cambridge.

Geneva defeated Madison, 16-7, to host today’s losers’-bracket title game at 6 p.m. against Conneaut. Today’s winner advances to the championship round at Ashtabula on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cederquist Park.
