Field set for softball Challenge


The field has been set for the first Sports and Sports Softball Challenge, which will be held the weekend of July 31-Aug. 2 at Ashtabula’s Softball City complex off West Avenue.

Activity will begin July 31 at 6 p.m. with a skills competition. The tournament actually begins Aug. 1 at 9 a.m. and runs throughout that day.

It resumes Aug. 2 at 9 a.m. with losers’-bracket play. The tournament’s championship round begins at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 2.

Participating teams are Conneaut’s American Legion Post 151, Madison’s A Squared Therapy LLC, Madison’s Cardinal Woods, Middlefield’s Creek Inn-Truckin’ Softball, Conneaut’s Daub Concrete, Conneaut’s Evergreen Lake Park-Signature Health, Ashtabula City Recreation’s JCI Construction, Conneaut’s JD’s Pizza-Creative Coating, Softball City’s Just In Time Staffing, City Rec’s Los Compadres, Middlefield’s Men of Summer, Madison’s Quigley’s, Conneaut’s Rainbow Cafe-Mona-Vie-Medico Systems, Madison’s Rival Satellite and Softball City’s Subway-Chop’s Grille and Tap House and Zehrco-Giancola.

Opening-round matchups on Aug. 1 at 9 a.m. pit Just in Time Staffing against A Squared Therapy and Daub Concrete against Creek Inn-Truckin’ Softball. They will be followed at 10 a.m. by Cardinal Woods against Evergreen-Signature and Zehrco-Giancola against Subway-Chop’s.

Beginning their tournament action at 11 a.m. Aug. 1 are Rival Satellite against Los Compadres and Men of Summer against JCI Construction. Games at noon match Quigley’s against American Legion and Rainbow against JD’s-Creative Coating.

Registration for the skills competition July 31 can be made in advance at the Softball City concession stand on Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 6-9 p.m. Final registration will be held at the Softball City pavilion beginning at 5 p.m. July 31.

The skills competition will begin with the base-running competition, followed by throwing for accuracy and concluding with a home-run hitting contest.
