A five-run first-inning lead was not enough for the Ashtabula All-Stars, who dropped an 11-8 verdict to Wheelersburg at the junior state baseball tournament in Oxford on Sunday.
The loss drops Ashtabula into the losers’ bracket, where it will tangle with Miami today at 4 p.m.
Tony Magda led the locals with three hits, including a double, and scored three runs. Andrew Graeb and Nick Meola had two singles apiece, while Alex DeCamillo doubled.
The big first inning for Ashtabula transformed when Magda, Kyle Downs, Meola and Graeb all singled and Ian Pertz hit a sacrifice.
