A resolution honoring a fallen Marine will be presented at Tuesday’s City Council meeting, according to the agenda released Friday by Clerk of Council LaVette Hennigan.
U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Kevin M. Cornelius, who was killed Aug. 7 in Afghanistan, was the son of Ashtabula Police Capt. Gerald Cornelius and Lakeside High School teacher Valerie Silleck. Council will present the parents with a resolution honoring their son at the beginning of the 7 p.m. meeting at City Hall. The public is invited to attend.
After the presentation, Ashtabula Area City Schools Superintendent Joseph Donatone will address council about the new elementary-school campus on Wade Avenue. This summer, construction crews worked nonstop at the 80-acre site, and Donatone is expected to talk about the work and give council an update on the schools, city officials said. The school district’s $42.8 million elementary-school campus is being funded through an agreement with the Ohio School Facilities Commission. The first elementary school is expected to open next fall, Donatone has said.
Other issues on the agenda:
n A new Neighborhood Watch group is forming in the Ashtabula Harbor neighborhood;
n An ordinance prohibiting parking on the north side of Bridge Street between Hulbert Avenue and 1105 Bridge St.;
n An ordinance prohibiting parking on the west side of Lake Avenue between West Sixth Street and 511 Lake Avenue; and
n An ordinance allowing the city manager to auction off or sell obsolete property, including a 1991 Vermeer stumper, a 1999 Cub Cadet mower, 1987 GMC bucket truck, a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria, a 1989 Ford tractor, a 2001 Ford van, a 1991 Ford flat-bed and a 2004 Crown Victoria.
