ASHTABULA — Rose Davis has her son’s birthday present ready for Saturday — the big 50 — and she knew just what to buy him.
“Richard was a huge, huge NASCAR fan,” she said. “I always bought him his NASCAR T-shirts.”
Richard Davis’ family will not celebrate with 50 candles on Saturday. Davis died Sunday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash at routes 20 and 11, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reports.
“I am beside myself,” Rose Davis said. “He was an amazing, loving, attentive son. He took such good care of us.”
Davis attended both Ashtabula and Harbor high schools, graduating in 1981. He was married to Donna Davis for more than six years and was father to Krystal Rio Davis, 27, and Christopher Davis, 16.
Donna Davis was injured in Sunday’s crash. She declined comment.
A carpet layer for many years, Richard Davis was employed with Thomas Fence at the time of his death.
“He had a lot of common sense,” his father, Richard Davis Sr., said. “And he was a very hard worker.”
Richard’s parents say he was almost obsessed with stock car racing, even decorating his house with NASCAR merchandise, collectibles and memorabilia.
“He loved it,” his father said. “It was such a part of who he was. He was very dedicated to it and he went to a lot of races. His house was fully, fully decorated with NASCAR stuff. We always knew what to buy him for birthdays and Christmas.”
Donna and Richard Davis enjoyed motorcycle riding, but both were recovering from serious injuries suffered in crash that occurred in Painesville in July.
In his younger days Davis enjoyed skateboarding with his brother Michael, body building and BMX riding, his parents said.
In recent years, Davis dedicated himself to helping his elderly parents.
“I just had a heart attack and Richard came over every day to do things and make sure we were OK,” he said. “He gave so much of himself to taking care of us.”
