Prizes for participation and healthy weight loss.
Kathy Chiacchiero, registered nurse and wellness coordinator at ACMC, said over the six years that Health for Life classes have met class members who have the support of family, co-workers or fitness buddies have consistently lost weight or met their fitness goals.
Since its start, Health for Life participants lost a total weight of nearly 4,000 pounds. Last year, the average weight loss was 10.3 pounds per person, with a 5.33 percentage loss of weight.
Chiacchiero said for some participants losing weight is not the goal.
“We have some people who are trying to maintain their weight, or they need the extra support and motivation to continue with a healthier lifestyle,” she said.
For those who need even more motivation, a variety of prizes will be offered for successfully meeting the weigh-in and class requirements of Health for Life.
A $200 prize will be awarded to the male and female and $400 to the couple who lose the most percentage of weight (as determined by regular weigh-ins at ACMC Rehabilitation Services or Premiere Fitness).
There are also other prizes to be given away, including four $50 cash prizes, a night’s stay at the Lodge at Geneva State Park ($150 value), and memberships to Premiere Fitness ($474 value) and the YMCA ($532 value).
Sign up and weigh-in first thing after the New Year on Jan. 2 at Premiere Fitness or ACMC’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Services De-partment.
The first class will begin on Jan. 9 at noon and again at 6 p.m.
All sessions meet in the ACMC Solarium (fifth floor). The classes will continue approximately every two weeks until the final class on April 3.

The earth will occasionally move under Ashtabula County
When the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811 and 1812 leveled Missouri, the shock waves were strong enough to ring church bells in New York and break windows in Washington D.C. People in southern Ohio fled from their cabins. Closer to the quake’s epicenter, earth liquefied, sand volcanoes popped up and rivers appeared to run backwards. It was the first recorded magnitude 8.0 earthquake in North America, and to this day the strongest. Seismologists agree it could happen again. Some believe it could happen any time within the next 50 years.
