Ashtabula police nab candy, jerky thief

ASHTABULA — A 24-year-old city man is behind bars today after police say he attempted to steal candy and beef jerky from a pharmacy Thursday night, according to police reports.

The incident occurred at about 8 p.m. at Rite Aid, 1115 W. Prospect Road, reports show.

The security guard saw the man trying to leave the store without paying for Reese’s cups and beef jerky, the report said.

When the guard tried to stop him the men got into a tussle, Chief Robert Stell said.

“The security guard had to use physical force to restrain him,” Stell said.

City police were called to the scene and arrested the man, charging him with aggravated robbery, according to police reports.
