JEFFERSON — Another $597,870.81 in federal stimulus money has been awarded to the Austinburg sanitary sewer project.
The Ashtabula County Board of Commissioners announced the additional funding Thursday, bringing the total award from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to $1,422,920.81.
Larry Meaney, director of the Ashtabula County Department of Environmental Services, said the county is receiving the additional money because some other ARRA projects in the state were not “shovel ready” and lost the funding. Rather than send the money back to Washington, the state redistributed it to projects already under way.
“It pays to keep your eye on the ball,” Meaney said.
Commissioners recently awarded the $2.8-million construction contract to Mr. Excavator of Kirtland. A pre-construction meeting was held Feb. 17, and work should begin early next month, said Commissioner Peggy Carlo.
The project has a “substantial completion” deadline of December to keep it within the mandated schedule of compliance, said Board President Joseph Moroski.
“It seems like we are well on track to meet the EPA’s schedule,” he said.
The project was ordered by the Ohio EPA in 2005. Initial assessments were estimated at $140 a foot, which would have devastated many of the affected property owners in the affected area — the intersection of routes 45 and 307, Industrial Drive and Mill, Chestnut, Betts and Maple streets.
Public officials, from township trustees to Rep. Steven LaTourette, began the search for funding. In addition to the stimulus money, grants have been obtained from the Army Corps of Engineers ($655,000) and two rounds of Ohio Public Works ($349,900 and $124,700).
The additional stimulus money will reduce the amount the county will have to borrow.
