A $68 million highway project got under way this week in Ashtabula County with the closing of a section of the Western Reserve Greenway Trail.
The closed section passes under Interstate 90, the pavement of which will undergo replacement as part of the huge project.
Brent Kovacs, a spokesman with the Ohio Department of Transportation, said Shelly and Sands was awarded the contract for the work, which will affect I-90 between state routes 11 and 45.
“It will be rebuilt from the dirt up,” Kovacs said.
The big ticket item on the project is a redesign of the interchange at Interstate 90 and Route 11. The project will involve purchasing additional land to eliminate the dangerous access ramps off Route 11.
Repairs to seven bridges along this section of the interstate also are part of the project. Kovacs said workers need access to the bridge over the Western Reserve Greenway Trail, which is why the trail is being closed in that section.
The detour for the trail has been set as State Route 307 to Chapel Road, and then on to Austinburg Road.
“There will be work going on under the bridge and we can’t have people walking or bicycling under it while that is going on,” Kovacs said.
The trail will be closed through mid-April, according to a press release from ODOT.
Kovacs said motorists can also expect various lane restrictions in that section as the contract begins work on the project this month. The restrictions were to have started this week, but took a back seat to the snow and wind that pelted the interstate.
The project’s completion date is 2016, Kovacs said.
