Patience is a virtue. It’s also an important attribute for Ashtabula Area City Schools’ next superintendent.
That’s because nothing is happening yet, and John Rubesich, superintendent of the Ashtabula County Educational Service Center, said the job won’t be posted until March 1.
The Ashtabula Area City Schools Board of Education asked Rubesich to conduct the superintendent’s search for them after Superintendent Joseph Donatone retired Jan. 1.
In the meantime, assistant Superintendent Patrick Colucci was named acting superintendent of the Ashtabula Area City School District.
“They have a competent person (Colucci) in there now,” Rubesich said. “We do administrative searches for many of the districts in the area.”
Typically, school boards will not allow their superintendents out of their contracts until the end of the school year, so it would be futile to interview and hire in the middle of the year, he said.
The job will be posted March 1, with a closing date of March 29.
On April 1, Rubesich’s staff at the Ashtabula County Educational Service Center will go through the applicants’ application packets with a checklist to determine whose packets included everything.
“You would be surprised at how many people don’t follow directions,” he said. “We take qualified and complete packets and give them to the school board.”
After the school board looks the packets over, Rubesich will hold a work session with the board to come up with applicants they want to interview, he said.
“The first interview is to get to know them,” he said. “We chip away at it; their strengths and weaknesses.”
The applicants that make the second stage of interviews are checked for background and references. There may or may not be a third round of interviews, he said.
The school board hopes to hire by the end of the school year.
