ASHTABULA —
"We are the Champions" played over loud speakers, students cheered and clapped and teachers gave short speeches.
Huron Primary School Principal Valerie Harper then praised the 51 third-grade students, as they were inducted into Ashtabula Area City Schools’ prestigious 400 Club.
The 400 Club is an organization created to celebrate the academic success of students who passed the fall Ohio Achievement Assessment. A score of “400” is the minimum score required by the State of Ohio to pass the test.
Later in the school year, students who did not pass will have a second opportunity to earn membership into the 400 Club or be inducted into the 800 Club, for passing both math and reading.
In the spring, students take the Ohio Achievement Assessment in both reading and math. To celebrate their academic achievement, Huron Primary held a special celebration assembly.
Students received a 400 Club T-shirt from their current third-grade teacher and a congratulatory pin from their second-grade teacher.
Parents were given a Dragon window poster with their child's name, identifying their 400 Club membership.
The celebration continued after the assembly with an ice-cream social hosted by their third-grade teachers: Lisa Love, Mary Schroeder, Raena Sidbeck and Bill Ricker.
Invitations were sent to family and friends of the students who also were on hand to celebrate. Parents applauded the school and its teachers.
“This was really wonderful,” Huron parent Molly Petros said. “What a great experience for these children.”
Parent Maria Wheelock agreed.
“To see so many children standing together saying 'we did it!' is so great,” she said.
Similar assemblies will be held at Ontario and Michigan Primary schools.
