MADISON TOWNSHIP —
A large garage was damaged during a Thursday afternoon fire on Middle Ridge Road, said Madison Fire Chief Gene Lutz.
“We had it under control in about two hours,” Lutz said of the blaze that destroyed the garage and some vehicles that were inside.
Lutz said the call came in around 1:20 p.m. on Thursday. He said a lot of Ashtabula County fire departments assisted in fighting the fire at 7579 Middle Ridge Road.
The fire departments that assisted Madison included Geneva, Saybrook, Perry, Jefferson, Rome, Harpersfield and Painesville, Lutz said.
Lutz said the fire department is still working on damage estimates. He said the cause of the fire is undetermined.
“It doesn’t appear to be suspicious,” he said. Lutz said the structure was locked when firefighters arrived.
Lutz said the department needed the help to shuttle water in tanker trucks about a mile from a fire hydrant at the intersection of County Line Road and Middle Ridge Road.
“The weather was an issue. It slowed response,” Lutz said. He said a number of Geauga County fire departments were involved in other emergencies.
“Unfortunately there were some valuable older cars (in the garage),” Lutz said.
He said all the fire departments that assisted were greatly appreciated. “The responding departments did a great job. We are thankful,” Lutz said.
