RICHMOND TOWNSHIP —
A young boy searching the beach for fishing lures came across the badly decomposed body of a man in Pymatuning State Park on Wednesday afternoon, Ashtabula County Coroner’s Investigator Jim Behr said.
The body is believed to be a missing Pennsylvania man, though Behr said either dental records or DNA testing will confirm the man’s identity.
“We think we know who this man was, but we can’t be 100 percent certain until those test results come back,” he said. “As of right now, the man’s family has to be notified that this could, possibly, be his body.”
Behr was dispatched to the wooded area about 75 yards from the beach at 3:30 p.m.
Behr said the man in question was reported missing on July 18.
“This body is fairly decomposed to the point that obviously we need to do some testing to determine the identity,” he said. “This body had been there for awhile.”
Behr said no foul play is suspected in the death, and the body will not undergo autopsy. The body was taken to the Ashtabula County Medical Center’s morgue until investigators can be certain of his identity.
“We are hoping to secure the medical records (of the missing man) to make that positive identification,” Behr said. “Failing that, we will do the DNA testing, but that will take substantially longer for results. If the dental records are available, we should be able to make a positive identification by the end of the week.”
Behr said the case belongs to the Pennsylvania Highway Patrol, as investigators took the original missing persons report on July 18.
