Good weather keeps people hunting

ASHTABULA COUNTY — Orange was a popular color Monday as deer hunters fanned out through the rural areas of Ashtabula County hoping to nab a buck, said Jason Hadsell, a state wildlife agent assigned to Ashtabula County.

“They went really well. This is the first time in a long time we had really good weather,” Hadsell said.

Hadsell said he was busy responding to complaints that range from hunting on private land without permission to poaching. He said the complaints were resolved and hunters appear to be in for a good week of hunting.

“Everywhere you looked there were trucks along the side of the road and orange in the road,” he said.

Eight or nine hunters along Route 7 in Monroe Township were ending their day about 4 p.m. “There is deer out there,” said one of the hunters who didn’t want to give his name because he doesn’t like to let people know where he hunts.

“We had a couple of guys (get deer),” he said.

The weather for the rest of week is looking good for hunters with the possibility of a bit of snow cover later in the week. “It keeps the deer moving,” Hadsell said.

Area deer hunters can check their deer at any area establishment that sells hunting licenses, by phone or by computer. He said there is no more carcass inspection.

Hadsell said this is the second year of the call in and tag in program.

Deer season is a big boost to the Ashtabula County economy, Hadsell said. “It brings in a lot of tourists,” he said.

Hadsell said many people come to hunt from out of state and stay in local hotels, providing bed tax revenue for the area.

“I met some people from Vermont,” he said.
