GENEVA —
A Pierpont Township man faces traffic and drug charges after was arrested for possession of heroin on Sunday, Western County Court records show.
A multi- jurisdictional alert had Geneva police officers on the lookout for Travis Leatherman, 26, who was wanted for a domestic violence incident in Ashtabula, Geneva police reports show.
“We were informed what truck (Leatherman) would be driving and that he may be carrying a gun,” Geneva Patrolman Roger Wilt said.
The officers were directed to the North Avenue area of the city, where they found Leatherman’s vehicle and initiated a traffic stop, police reports show.
“As I pulled behind the vehicle, it began to swerve in and out of lanes of travel,” Wilt said.
Leatherman brought the truck to a stop and was ordered out of the vehicle.
“He exited the truck and took two steps and then turned as if to go back to his vehicle,” Wilt said.
Leatherman complied with the officers’ orders to walk toward the police cruisers, Wilt said, where he was taken into custody while his vehicle was searched.
Wilt said he found a “cut down straw” in Leatherman’s wallet.
“The cut down straw was fashioned into a snorting tube,” he said. “The tube contained white residue.”
During a search of Leatherman’s vehicle, officers found a silver canister with a “brownish, rock-type substance that was consistent with heroin,” Wilt said.
They also uncovered a digital scale.
The substance tested positive for heroin, police reports show.
Leatherman was arrested and charged with felony drug abuse, possession of a drug abuse instrument and driving under suspension, Western County Court records show.
A preliminary hearing in the case will be held on Dec. 10.
