Controversial recycling bin to stay put in Conneaut
CONNEAUT — A county recycling bin that has been the source of neighborhood complaints won’t be moved anytime soon, City Manager Robert Schaumleffel Jr. said at Monday’s City Council meeting.
The bin has sat for years sits on Lake Road in the parking lot of the city’s litter/ recycling department. It is one of three bins maintained by the Ashtabula County Solid Waste District.
In recent months, residents have complained about debris that people stack outside the bin, which blows onto other properties, causing a nuisance. City and county officials have met with residents to discuss the problem, according to reports.
The county’s recycling department has informed city administrators it is reluctant to move the bin to another spot, Schaumleffel said.
The city plans to appeal to people to deposit their recyclable materials later in the week to take advantage of other pickup days. The bins are emptied three days a week, and the Monday rotation is the heaviest of the three, Schaumleffel said.
In other business, Council President Thomas Udell has announced committee chairmanships for the foreseeable future. Assignments include: Public Safety (Ward 2 Councilman Charles Lewis), utilities (Ward 1 Councilman Dave Campbell); economic development (Ward 4 Councilman Tony “Dino” Julio), public works (Ward 3 Councilman Greg Mooney); parks/ recrea-tion (Councilman-at-large John Roach); and finance/ ordinance (Councilman-at-large Robert Naylor).
In addition, Naylor will serve as council liaison to the Conneaut Port Authority, while Julio retains the same position with the Conneaut Board of Education and Lewis with the city’s Board of Tourism.
