JEFFERSON —
Don’t be fooled by the recent hot, humid weather — the sneezin’, shivering season is fast approaching and the Ashtabula County Health Department stands ready with a series of flu clinics..
The first of the clinics starts next week, said Chris Kettunen, director of nursing. That’s an earlier start than last year’s clinics, she said. Since an ample supply of vaccine is already on hand, the health department was able to get permission from the state and the Centers for Disease Control to start its immunization program ahead of schedule, she said.
A vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months and up, Kettunen said. Protection begins about two weeks after the injection and lasts about one year, she said.
This year, the county will offer both the flu shot and nasal spray. A high dose vaccine is suggested for folks 65 years and older. Cost is $20 for regular vaccine and $40 for the high dose. Also available is an intradermal vaccine ($30), which is administered in the arm with a very short needle and recommended for people ages 18-64.
The county health department accepts Medicare Part B and Medicaid and private insurance.
