HARPERSFIELD TOWNSHIP — “Yesssss!”
Reese Laufenburger watched his bowling ball slip and roll down the alley at Sonny Lanes on Sunday. He held his breath as the ball veered toward the gutter, changing trajectory at the last moment and striking four pins.
Reese, 8, joined 40 people for the Bowl for Kids’ Sake to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties.
Ashtabula County Medical Center operations manager and BBBS board member Ambrose Jackson said ACMC staff was happy to join in the fundraising at the Sonny Lanes event.
“I am a Big Brother,” Jackson said. “So the employees at ACMC rallied to help out here today.”
Jackson said ACMC’s support of BBBS speaks to the hospital’s large sense of community involvement.
“ACMC as a whole looks to play a role in the community beyond great health care,” he said. “We take an active role in the community and events that support the community.”
Val Laufenburger said she was happy to help at the Bowl-a-Thon.
“This is for such a good cause and it is a neat event,” she said.
Event organizer Terri Platt said the bowling events will raise at least $25,000 for BBBS to help establish and promote events for children, including community and after school programs.
The event was sponsored by The News Herald, Fairmount Minerals, Kinetico Inc., Watson Power Bulk Material Handler, the Kilbourne family, the Kovalcheck/Mallett family, Black Lab Corp., Dan Dee Potato Chips, Eat N Park, Pepsi Americas, Zeppe’s Pizza, and WELO 1330 AM radio.
Contributors include Applebee’s, Arby’s, BJ’s Tanning Salon, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Home Depot, and the Lake County Captains.
The BBBS Bowl-a-Thon continues on Sunday at Ernst Lanes in Chardon and again at Freeway Lanes in Mentor on March 28.
Participants register and raise $50 or more in pledges to attend.
Big Brother Big Sister is also looking for sponsors for its annual golf outing at Little Mountain Country Club in Concord Township. The event will be held June 15.
