RICHMOND TOWNSHIP — Two dead horses lying in a pasture just off Route 7 have been buried, Richmond Township Trustee David Ballentine said Friday.
“I personally took care of it,” he said.
The issue was brought to light when school bus driver Karen Powell noticed the horses were thin and called the Ashtabula County Humane Society. After several months, Powell noticed the horses were gone. On Wednesday, Powell saw the bodies of the horses showing from underneath the melting snow.
The horses belonged to Ballentine’s mother-in-law.
“The minute I got the call about the horses in the field, I took care of it,” Ballentine said.
“The horses were buried (on Friday), and the health department called and will come out to make sure the bodies were properly taken care of.”
Ballentine said it was unfortunate the situation happened with a family member but said he would do the same for anyone else who needed help.
“I just needed to know about it,” he said. “That’s the way I am.”
Humane Society agents said they checked on the horses over the winter and noted the animals were very old, even in their 30’s and 40’s. A Humane agent said the horses “did not suffer,” and no citations will be issued in the case.
“Horses live to be 20 to 25,” the humane agent said. “A horse that is 30 years old or more is a very old horse.”
Ballentine said he is grateful for the people who saw a problem and called to have it fixed.
“I apologize for this really unfortunate situation,” he said. “I appreciate the people who called. Things like this shouldn’t go on, and it takes someone who sees something and reports it to make things right.”
