Guidelines in place for animal burial

JEFFERSON — Farm animals may be buried on private property if specific guidelines are followed, according to Ray Saporito, Ashtabula County health commissioner.

A story in Friday’s Star Beacon incorrectly reported that animals cannot be buried on farm property and must be removed by a professional service.

Not so — as long as some rules are followed, Saporito said. The regulations are a conglomeration of rules set by the Environmental Protec-tion Agency, public health laws and Department of Agriculture procedures, he said.

“It’s a balancing act we have to do,” Saporito said.

Burials must be to a certain depth and occur a generous distance from water wells, waterways and property lines.

“We want 3 to 4 feet of soil cover on top,” Saporito said. “Also, lime should be put in the hole to kill bacteria and control odors.”

The type of soil also factors into the regulations. Most county farms sit atop clay soil, which helps to control runoff water, Saporito said. Ideally, animals should be buried a few hundred feet from a water well and between 100 and 300 feet from a property line, he said.
