ANDOVER TOWNSHIP —
People can enjoy Ashtabula County’s Lights on the Lake at Lake Shore Park while taking a ride back in time.
This year, visitors can take a 45-minute, horse-drawn wagon ride through the park that will surely inspire visions of sugar plums and the sound of happy jingle bells, said Byron Sackett of Dorset.
Sackett and his father, Dale Sackett of Sheffield, provide the horses and wagon. This is the sixth year the father and son team have brought the horses to the park to show visitors the Lights on the Lake drive-through light display at Lake Shore Park.
“People really enjoy it. We have benches and steps; just bring a blanket and dress warm,” Byron Sackett said, noting it’s highly recommended people buy their tickets in advance because the seats sell out fast.
Visitors will experience more than 70 displays on Lake Shore Park’s 54 rolling hills on the shores of Lake Erie. The twinkling, colorful displays include Christmas trees, elves, a Nativity scene, poinsettias, penguins and lots more.
In its seventh year, the Lights on the Lake committee added to some displays and boasts a new, big surprise. Hint: It breathes fire!
As visitors enter the park, they are encouraged to view the hand-painted 12 Days of Christmas murals by Ashtabula artist John Torma.
The Sackett horse-drawn wagon team hauls 15 people at a time and leaves from the Crow’s Nest, located at the north end of Route 11 at 1257 Harmon Road. Departure times and dates are 6:15 p.m., 7 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Dec. 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22 and 30. The Sacketts also will be there on Jan. 1 at 7 p.m., 7:45 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for ages 13 and older; $3 for ages 12 and younger. That price includes entrance to Lights on the Lake.
