CONNEAUT —
An event at Lake Erie Correctional Institution on Sunday afternoon that spawned rumors of an inmate takeover and hostages was handled internally without the help of any outside agencies, according to reports.
One inmate sparked the “minor” incident, according to a statement issued Monday by John Tanner, LaECI’s public information officer. Here is the statement:
“Yesterday (Sunday) afternoon staff at the Lake Erie Correctional Institution responded to a minor incident. One inmate sustained minor injuries, after refusing direct orders from staff, that were treated on-site. There were no staff injuries.”
No outside agencies were needed at the prison, Tanner said. Conneaut police were told two inmates were placed in segregation units, said Sgt. Randy Poore. The Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office heard of the incident but was later informed initial reports were overstated and no deputies were needed at the prison, said Lt. William Niemi.
A call to the Ohio Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation was not immediately returned Monday afternoon. LaECI is a privately-owned prison minimum/medium security prison purchased from the state this year by Corrections Corporation of America.

The earth will occasionally move under Ashtabula County
When the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811 and 1812 leveled Missouri, the shock waves were strong enough to ring church bells in New York and break windows in Washington D.C. People in southern Ohio fled from their cabins. Closer to the quake’s epicenter, earth liquefied, sand volcanoes popped up and rivers appeared to run backwards. It was the first recorded magnitude 8.0 earthquake in North America, and to this day the strongest. Seismologists agree it could happen again. Some believe it could happen any time within the next 50 years.
