GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE —
Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that sent flames shooting toward the sky late Friday evening destroying a trailer and its contents.
“We found a fully engulfed mobile home,” said Capt. Jim Sample of the Geneva-on-the-Lake Fire Department of the fire at Lot 85 of Lake Grove Village Trailer Park.
Firefighters from Geneva-on-the-Lake , Geneva and Saybrook Township battled the blaze that occurred in a double-wide mobile home.
Sample said he was unsure of the ownership of the mobile home, or mobile home park, but indicated Theodore Graeb was apparently the only person living in the home.
“As far as I know it was only him,” he said.
Dozens of people congregated outside their homes as firefighters battled the blaze and police helped with crowd control.
Sample said the original call, around 9 p.m., indicated the structure was fully involved, but the occupant was out of the building. He said Graeb did make an attempt to re-enter the building, but was unsuccessful and suffered a small burn on his hand.
Sample said Graeb refused treatment for the injury. He said the fire started in the living room area, but the cause is undetermined with the investigation being handled by the Ohio State Fire Marshall’s office.
Investigators from the OSFM were on the scene early Saturday morning and will return Monday morning, he said.
Geneva-on-the-Lake Police Chief Tim Bruckman said his department had a small role in the investigation that is being handled primarily by the OSFM.
A firefighter experienced difficulty while fighting the blaze. “We had one of our firefighters who was transported for heat exhaustion, and dehydration, and he was treated and released,” he said.
Sample said the fire department immediately went into a defensive strategy to keep the fire from surrounding homes because of the intense heat and the progress the fire had already made in the structure.
“There was damage to a trailer on each side,” Sample said. He said the heat caused siding to wrinkle and estimated each home could need $15,000 to $18,000 in repair work.
The mobile home at lot 85 was a total loss with an estimated $8,000 for the structure and $10,000 to the contents. He said it is difficult to determine the actual value of a mobile home.
“Geneva did a phenomenal job as always,” Sample said.
