ASHTABULA —
North Park was renamed Lance Cpl. Kevin Michael Cornelius Memorial Park at the Ashtabula City Council meeting Monday night.
Ward 4 Councilwoman Julie Lattimer presented the Cornelius family with a resolution renaming the park, as well as honoring the fallen Marine, who was killed Aug. 7 in Afghanistan. He was 20 years old.
A standing ovation followed the presentation.
Cornelius’ brother, U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Eric Cornelius, thanked City Council.
“Generations from now will know the sacrifice my brother made,” he said. “The support the community has showed us gave us a lot of comfort. It makes me proud to say, ‘I’m from Ashtabula, Ohio.’”
Cornelius was the son of Ashtabula Police Capt. Gerald Cornelius and Lakeside High School teacher Valerie Silleck.
