CONNEAUT —
A yacht-building company interested in acquiring a building in the middle of a legal muddle could face a more costly hurdle.
City Manager Tim Eggleston, at Monday night’s City Council economic development committee meeting, said he strongly recommends Eastport Yachts of Maryland, interested in owning the building it now subleases, be required to clean up the chemical contaminates detected on the property.
“The agreement must (state) that they be willing to clean up the site,” Eggleston said. “That’s got to be part of the deal.”
For nearly a year, Eastport has leased space in a building on property that has been at the center of a legal tug-of-war for years. The owner of the building and land, Broad and Jackson LLC, owes nearly $300,000 in property taxes. The amount due includes the city’s cost of flattening the old Astatic factory, a chore the city assumed when the owners balked at razing a building slapping with fire and safety code citations.
Recently, a company that specializes in examining old industrial and commercial property for their development potential has detected contaminants in the soil on and near where the Astatic once stood. The cost of removing the pollutants could be considerable, officials have said.
