Teams play dodgeball to raise funds for Ashtabula Rotary

ASHTABULA — Richard Yopp had the ball in his hands and his eye on his target.

He bounced the blue ball once and launched it, just in time to get hit by another ball from the opposing team. Such is the game of dodgeball.

Teams from across the county played in the Ashtabula Rotary’s annual dodgeball tournament at the Kent State University Ashtabula Campus on Saturday, launching and dodging through round after round of intense off-the-playground competition.

“Hey, this is hard,” player Ben Thomas said. “I mean, really intense. Dodgeball isn’t like we remember it in school. When you play with adults, it’s rough on the body and there is a lot more diving and dodging than you would think. This is not little kid dodgeball.”

The fundraiser will put money into several community projects funded by the Rotary, event organizer Kristy Vavpetic said.

“We do a lot of beautifying projects within the area,” she said. “All the money raised here today goes right back into the community.”

The 29 teams raised $5,900 on Saturday, Vavpetic said.

“We are so blessed to have companies and local businesses really support this fundraiser with players. The teams are great.”

Ashley Fedler of team Edward Jones said she played dodgeball in high school, but likes the grown-up version better.

“The rules are a lot better and it’s just more fun,” she said.

Of the 29 teams, only three could place Vavpetic said.

First place went to team Head Shots. Team Schweatie Balls from Reese Machine Co. took second place, and Ashta Chemicals took the third place trophy.

The event was sponsored by: Andover Bank, Andrews and Pontius, Aqua Ohio, Ashtabula Concrete Inc., Broad Street Electric, Cristal Global, Thomas Fence, Edward Jones, Great Lakes Auto, Have Inc., Hughes Roller Co., Huntington Insurance, J&W Paint, Jim Dandy Cleaning Services, Ken Forging, Kister Construction, Main Avenue Agency, Mike’s Bikes and More, Molded Fiberglass, Nolan Door and Hardware, Senita Roofing and Insulation, Smolen Engineering, Vector Security, and Wholesale Imports.
