JEFFERSON —
A 7-year-old child dialed 911 early Sunday morning after discovering the body of her mother, who authorities say appears to have died from a drug overdose.
The 27-year-old Ashtabula woman died in the bathroom of a room at the Economy Inn and Suites in Ashtabula Township, according to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office. Mother and child were the only people in the room at the time, according to a report.
The girl told deputies her mother went into the bathroom, and when she didn’t emerge in 30 minutes, she went in to check on her. The child tried to “wake” her mother, and when the woman didn’t respond the girl called 911 around 4 a.m., deputies said. The girl was at the front door when paramedics arrived.
Drug paraphernalia was found in a makeup bag in the bathroom, investigators said. The woman had left a drug rehabilitation program on June 25, deputies said.
The child went home with her grandmother, deputies said. Toxicology tests will help pin down the cause of death, said coroner’s investigator Richard Mongell.
