Local Girl Scout troops seek more leaders to fill program needs

GENEVA — There are dozens of girls across Ashtabula County waiting to join Girl Scouts of America, but a desperate lack of troop leaders and individual troops has the organization in a twist locally, membership volunteer program specialist Chris Hancock said.

“The girls interested in scouting well exceeds the leaders we need to accommodate the troops,” Hancock said. “This isn’t just in Ashtabula — we need leaders in Geneva, Orwell, Madison and across the area.”

To that end, Hancock will host a recruitment event from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Geneva Public Library.

“The problem is that the troops are filled to capacity,” she said. “And I feel so bad when I have to turn girls away, because they are obviously interested in scouting.”

Troop leaders are involved with a group of girls — any age level — to help guide them through activities and trips that help build girls of courage confidence and character, Hancock said.

Troops can be led by one or two troop leaders or by a co-op of mothers. At least two adults must be present for each meeting. Leaders are responsible for organizing the meetings and trips, making sure appropriate forms are completed, and must attend monthly service unit meetings. Troop meetings can be held monthly, bi-monthly or weekly.

“Leadership doesn’t have to come from just one person,” Hancock said. “Friends or family members can be co-leaders. Leaders set their own meetings and programs. We try to make it flexible for everyone.”
