ALMOST GONE

Old Ashtabula High School all but history

ASHTABULA — Demolition on the old Ashtabula High School on West 44th Street has left little left of the structure built in 1916.

On Thursday, after several weeks of work, just the entrance and the west wall of the main building remains amid piles of bricks and concrete.

Items which were identified to be salvaged and turned over to the district have been removed and delivered to the district for storage and safekeeping, said Ben Pintabona, project manager.

“We will see much more activity at the old Ashtabula High School for the next few weeks as the site is transformed into a grass field,” he said. “The contractor is working to segregate what is recyclable, what will be crushed and used to backfill basements and what needs to go to a landfill.”

Demolition at the high school is much more ecologically friendly today than it would have been 10 years ago, he said.

In June, the board awarded the bid to abate the school of asbestos to Cardinal Environmental Services of Akron for $212,875.

ProQuality Land Development was awarded the job of demolishing the school for $365,000.

“All work should be done by the end of December,” Pintabona said.

The district ends its building projects in good shape — about $253,000 under budget.

Pintabona said, “We will continue to closely monitor the budget until all the work is done and all the bills have been paid.”
