NK woman wants underwear for vets

NORTH KINGSVILLE —  North Kingsville resident Shirley Corlett is at it again.

Last spring, Corlett spearheaded an effort to collect personal care supplies for patients at the Louis Stokes Veterans Affairs Hospital in Cleveland. Residents donated enough items to fill 65 boxes in this “Pay it Back” effort organized by Corlett and family and friends.

With Christmas approaching, Corlett is once again asking the community to pay it back by providing a basic need to the 600 veterans hospitalized at the Cleveland facility.

“We are being asked to provide underwear,” Corlett said. “It is incredible to me that these men and women, who have given so much for us, are in need of everyday basics. Federal funding to the VA hospital does not include these basics.”

Corlett will launch her Ashtabula County campaign next week by placing drop-off boxes at the Jefferson Community Center, Jefferson Gazette, Conneaut Community Center, Ducro Funeral Home (Elm Avenue, Ashtabula location) and Northwest Ambulance Headquarters, Geneva.

The requested items are white, cotton socks; T-shirts; men’s briefs; and women’s underwear. The women’s articles may be in colors.

Requested sizes are medium, large, extra large and 1X.

“They aren’t asking for anything spectacular, just underwear,” Corlett said. “I’m also asking that you include a signed Christmas card with your items. These cards are to be a thank you to our veterans for their service to our country and to provide warm wishes to them at Christmastime.”

Her goal is to collect at least 600 Christmas cards so each veteran will receive at least one card from the county. She suggests having a card party and asking friends and family to contribute cards, or perhaps a Sunday school class or other church group could organize an effort with homemade cards.

“Do whatever it takes to help our veterans,” Corlett said. “Ashtabula County is full of loving and caring people, and I am excited and hopeful once again. I saw what we as a county did last spring with the first “Pay It Back” project, and I know that we can have a wonderfully successful Christmas campaign, as well.”

Corlett said she also plans to hold another a hygiene-supplies drive in the spring. The underwear drive runs through Nov. 19. For information or to volunteer, call Corlett at 224-1173.
