ASHTABULA — A 17-year-old girl, who her family reported missing after she went to school Jan. 5 but never made it to class, was found Friday at the home of her 21-year-old boyfriend and his family, police said.
At about 2 p.m. Friday, four Ashtabula city police officers arrived at the home of Christopher Brooks,
4012 Tod Ave., Ashtabula, according to police reports.
“We spoke to Christopher Brooks, the boyfriend … he came to the door,” said detective Sgt. Joseph Cellitti. “We explained the serious nature of the incident, and after 15 minutes, he said she was inside.”
Hailie Sanders then put on her shoes and walked out of the Brooks’ home, Cellitti said. She was unharmed, Cellitti said.
“Her family was elated that we located her,” he said.
Hailie attends Lakeside High School.
Police transported her to the Youth Development Center, where she will remain until Tuesday.
“We are just thankful she’s safe,” said Hailie’s stepmother, Crystal Sanders. “We are so happy they found her.”
Brooks was arrested on two outstanding warrants dating back to when he was a juvenile, and he was transported to the city jail, Cellitti said. He also was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, Cellitti said.
Brooks will be arraigned Tuesday in Municipal Court.
Hailie was reported missing last week by her father and stepmother, who started circulating e-mails Wednesday with Hailie’s photograph, in the hope that someone would recognize her. Once her photo and the story were printed in Thursday’s Star Beacon, the case really got moving, and tips started coming into the police department about her whereabouts, her family said.
