ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP —
The driver of the 2007 Hummer H2 sports utility vehicle that hit and killed a 49-year-old Ashtabula man Sunday failed to yield at the traffic signal, said Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Jerad Sutton.
The OHP is still investigating the fatal crash at routes 11 and 20, and no charges have been filed, awaiting toxicology reports on both drivers, Sutton said.
The OHP has said they do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Richard C. Davis Jr., driver of the Jeep Cherokee, which was struck by the Hummer at about 5:41 p.m., was pronounced dead upon arrival at Ashtabula County Medical Center, said Jim Behr, investigator for the Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office.
Jeffrey E. Brunty, 38, of Ashtabula, who was behind the wheel of the Hummer, was treated at the scene for his injuries, according to OHP reports.
Donna Davis, the wife of Richard Davis, who was a passenger in his vehicle, was transported to a Cleveland hospital, where she was treated for her injuries, admitted and released the next day, according to OHP reports and family members.
OHP’s preliminary investigation shows Brunty’s Hummer H2 sports utility vehicle was traveling eastbound on Route 20, while Davis was driving his Jeep Grand Cherokee northbound on Route 11, troopers said.
When Richard Davis traveled north on the exit ramp, he had a green light to turn west on Route 20 and the Hummer had a red light, according to the OHP ‘s investigation. Brunty’s Hummer hit Davis’ Jeep Cherokee, the OHP reports. Both vehicles came to rest on the roadway.
Ashtabula Township emergency crews extricated Richard Davis from his vehicle, township Fire Chief Mike Fitchet has said.
Brunty and Richard and Donna Davis were wearing their seatbelts, OHP troopers said.
