The new, bigger Dollar General at 1511 Lake Avenue is open.
The “soft opening” occurred Saturday, and on Tuesday, the store was filled with customers looking for deals and eyeing the aisles filled with candy, chips, pop, dairy items, paper products, pet food, cleaning supplies, seasonal items, housewares, toys, cards, health and beauty, school supplies, clothing, kitchen items and more.
“It’s beautiful,” Shirley Grippi of Ashtabula said. “There’s a lot more room than in the other one.”
Her friend, Zanna Juhola of Ashtabula, agreed.
“They have a nice variety of everything,” she said.
Seven-year-old Isabelle Nejbauer, a student at Ridgeview Elementary School, said she liked “all the new stuff” as she perused the toy aisle with her parents. The large selection of toys for $1 especially caught her attention, she said.
Customers of all ages searching for $1 items won’t be disappointed.
Nearly a year ago, the Zaremba Group from Cleveland announced plans to demolish the Italian restaurant at 1511 Lake Ave., and build a new Dollar General store 9,100 square feet larger than the existing store at 2203 Lake Ave., according to Lucianna Ratermann, director of the city’s planning and community development.
The old store was a fixture in the Ashtabula Plaza for years. It is now closed.
The new store, which opened this week, created three new jobs and is open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
Purchase of the restaurant and adjacent land provided 36 spaces for on-site parking.
Dollar General employees also expect pedestrian shoppers from nearby neighborhoods.
There are trash cans outside the store so shoppers won’t litter when entering or exiting the store.
