JEFFERSON —
Hardwood lumber from the Ashtabula County Highway Department is headed to the county’s online auction site.
Engineer Tim Martin said the lumber was sawn from trees that had to be removed during a project on Plymouth Ridge Road more than a decade ago. The rough-sawn lumber was cut into various dimensions and, over the years, provided a stockpile for county bridge repair projects. Some of the lumber was used in Martin’s office, as well.
Supervisor Amir Garakouei said, from an engineering standpoint, the county is limited in how it can use the lumber because a structural value can’t be assigned to it. Garakouei said the county can make better use of the store space by selling the stockpile.
“It’s hardwood lumber, smaller pieces that we couldn’t use and some odd-shaped pieces,” Martin said. “We’re trying to clean things up.”
There are more than 400 pieces of lumber in the auction. The lengths range from 8 to 18 feet, the thickness from 3.5 to 8 inches. The lumber is being offered as a single lot with a starting bid of $2,000.
Garakouei said the lumber is mostly oak. Possible uses would include restoration projects, pole barn construction, crafts and furniture. The lumber was not kiln dried, however.
Commissioners on Tuesday approved sending the lumber to the county’s online auction, ashtabulacountyohioauctions.com. Proceeds from the sale, minus an auction fee, will go to the Ashtabula County Engineer’s fund.
Garakouei said that while the county workers will assist the buyer with loading, transporting the lumber will be the successful buyer’s responsibility.
