ASHTABULA — A 38 year-old woman suffered severe injuries Thursday morning when her boyfriend hit her in the head with a baseball bat, police said.
City police were called at 8:17 a.m. to the 1000 block of West 38th Street for a domestic altercation, according to Ashtabula Police Department reports.
Police immediately began searching for the suspect, who had fled the scene in the direction of the Ohio Avenue apartments, said Sgt. John Koski said.
A search of an Ohio Avenue apartment turned up crack cocaine, but no suspect, he said.
The victim was flown by helicopter to Huron Road Hospital, Koski said.
As of Thursday afternoon, she was in critical condition, Koski said.
At about 1:45 p.m. an alert police officer spotted the suspect walking along Station Avenue and was taken into custody, Koski said.
