With spring officially here today, it’s time to get ready for summer at Walnut Beach with project engineers and new construction, City Manager Jim Timonere said.
More specifically, it is time to hire engineering services needed to fix up the dilapidated concession stand and restrooms.
City Council approved an ordinance Monday night authorizing the city manager to hire GPD Engineering Group of Youngstown in an amount not to exceed $16,958 to be taken from the economic development fund.
The concession stand is slated to get $125,000 in much-needed improvements in time for the summer, Timonere said.
“We are going to clean up the area, put in new lighting, paint, and remodel the restrooms,” he said. “We want to make it so the public can use the restrooms even when the concession stand is closed.”
Ron Kurpik, who is also kitchen manager at Times Square at Geneva-on-the-Lake, was the vendor in charge of the food last year at Walnut Beach.
In addition to concessions, the beach offers visitors picnic pavilions, a walkway to the beach, a playground and a variety of natural trees, flowers and plants.
Big Bands on the Beach will return this summer, thanks to Ashtabula County Medical Center’s sponsorship. Timothy Kalil will serve as organizer.
Timonere said Walnut Beach did a great business last year.
The city also received a grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for new swimming buoys to mark off the safe swimming area, he said.
The city will hire two lifeguards for the beach, as well.
