City Council votes to annex portion of Wade Avenue
ASHTABULA — An issue that has caused so much contention with City Council, and in the community, passed without so much as a grumble Wednesday night.
City Council voted 5-2 to annex a portion of Wade Avenue in Saybrook Township on which the Ashtabula Area City School Board is building five campus-style elementary schools. Vice President Betty Kist and Ward 1 Councilman Joseph Rose cast the two no votes.
The vote came about with little talk and no input from the sparse audience, which consisted of four residents and five other city officials.
At last week’s council meeting, Ward 2 Councilman August Pugliese asked for the legislation supporting the annexation. That resolution is what council passed Wednesday night.
City Manager Anthony Cantagallo planned the 2010 city budget, assuming the annexation of the Wade Avenue school property. Two weeks ago, he told council the city needed the revenue. He talked about the income tax the construction workers at the site could be paying to the city.
Council President Chuck Brockway said it was time for council members to cooperate.
The Ashtabula County commissioners approved the annexation six months ago.
Despite all the debating between city officials and members of the community, Ashtabula Area City Schools Superintendent Joseph Donatone said he remained optimistic. He expected council to annex the property “sooner or later.”
