ASHTABULA — Local merchants are humming the phrase, “shoppers rush home with their treasures,” as last-minute holiday gift buyers have been flooding their stores Wednesday afternoon.
Lorie Dalrymple, owner of Beaches, 1034 Bridge St., in the Ashtabula Harbor, said that men have been the majority of last minute buyers in her store that specializes in beach glass jewelry.
“We have been quite busy, people are definitely buying the jewelry and gift certificates,” Dalrymple said.
Just one door over inside Sandpiper Gallery which features hand made Lampwork jewelry, 1034 Bridge St., owner Nancy Hedrick said there has been a steady stream of last-minute shoppers all day.
“They are looking for hand made gifts and gift certificates which are also good for our classes,” Hedrick said.
Across the street at 1005 Bridge St., Toni and Ren Carlisle, of Carlisle’s Home in the Harbor, said business has been great and they feel very lucky considering the present economy.
“We have sold out of the phenomenal Swans of Lake Shore Park Calendar by local artisan Wendy Shick,” Toni Carlisle said. “We are selling a lot of wine, ornaments, gourmet foods and hand-painted glasses by another successful local artist.”
JR Hofstetters, the Family Jeweler, 53 N. Chestnut St., Jefferson, has also been getting a lot of last-minute shoppers.
“The whole holiday season this year has been very good,” said Jim Hofstetter, owner. “We haven’t had an “in” item this year, we’ve been selling from all around the store.”
Also in Jefferson, Linda Sowry, owner of The Sonshine Corner Book Store, 44 N. Chestnut St., said Tuesday was the biggest day they’ve had this year and Wednesday was steady all day with people looking for last minute gifts.
“Devotionals for 2010 are almost sold out, Christmas gift books and historical fiction books have been the top sellers,” Sowry said.
Fresh flowers seem to be the last minute rage in Conneaut according to Michelle Brennan, owner of Morris Flowers and Gifts, 176 Washington St.
“Yesterday and today have been very busy, a lot busier than what I thought,” Brennan said. “Most people want center piece flower arrangements and lots of men are taking fresh flowers home to their wives.”
Primitive Gatherings, 19 W. Main St., Geneva, owner Andrea Kosch summed it up best with, “I can’t talk I have a store full of customers.”
