GENEVA — The Geneva-on-the-Lake couple injured in a crash that killed Carri L. Shehan are listed in critical condition at Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center, Ashtabula County Coroner’s Investigator Rich Mongell reported Sunday, and both face life-threatening injuries and complications.
Shehan, 40, of Geneva, was killed Friday when William E. Johns, 44, of Geneva failed to stop at a stop sign at Maple Road and Route 534. Johns’ F-150 pickup collided with Tammy Phillipp’s Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reports.
Shehan was a passenger in the Jeep, OHP reports.
“Both vehicles traveled off the west side of the road and the Jeep Grand Cherokee (Phillipp’s vehicle) overturned,” OHP reports
Shehan was killed instantly, Mongell said, and Tammy and Fred Phillipp were critically injured.
“(Shehan) died of blunt force trauma to the head, trunk and extremities,” Mongell said.
“Fred Phillipp is in an induced coma because of swelling in his brain,” Mongell said. “Tammy will undergo her third or fourth surgery (Monday).”
Johns suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene, OHP reports. Troopers found Johns “impaired,” OHP reports.
“He was subsequently arrested and is incarcerated at the Ashtabula County Jail. Johns is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, though more charges will be filed after review with the Ashtabula County Prosecutor’s Office, OHP reports.
Johns will be arraigned in Western County Court within the week, an OHP dispatcher said Sunday.
Ashtabula County and Ashtabula Municipal court records show Johns has no previous record of driving under the influence.
