GENEVA TOWNSHIP — Two teenagers will spend Christmas without their mother after a two vehicle crash claimed the life of a 40-year-old Geneva woman late Friday evening.
Carri L. Shehan, 40, was declared dead at the scene by the Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office, said coroner’s investigator Richard Mongell. He said Shehan had children 17 and 19 years old.
“At approximately 9:40 p.m. (Friday) William E. Johns, 44, of Geneva, was westbound on Maple Road in a 2000 Ford F-150 pickup (while) Tammy Phillipp, 42, of Geneva-on-the-Lake, was southbound in a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee,” according to a Ohio Highway Patrol press release.
Johns failed to yield at the stop sign at the corner of Maple Road and Route 534 and collided with the vehicle driven by Phillipp, the release stated.
“Both vehicles traveled off the west side of the road and the Jeep Grand Cherokee (Phillipp’s vehicle) overturned,” the release states.
Fred Phillipp, 37, a passenger in Phillipp’s vehicle and also of Geneva-on-the-Lake, and Tammy Phillipp, were transported from the scene to UH Geneva Medical Center by ambulance and then flown to Cleveland Metropolitan Hospital by helicopter, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol and Mongell.
Johns received minor injuries and refused medical treatment, the release states. It also states that he was found to be impaired and is incarcerated in Ashtabula County Jail after he was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide.
“Further charges will follow consultation with the Ashtabula County Prosecutor’s Office,” the release states.
“They actually called for three helicopters but canceled one,” Mongell said. He said the Phillipps are still in critical condition at CMH.
