’Bula BOE race results final

Trebuchon-Wertz wins by three votes

JEFFERSON — It’s over.

Incumbent Janine Trebuchon-Wertz won the third seat on the Ashtabula Area City School Board by three votes.

It took the Ashtabula County Board of Elections about seven hours Wednesday to hand-count the Trebuchon-Wertz vs. Deborah Wright battle in the Ashtabula Area City School Board race — again,

once and for all.

At the end of the day, Trebuchon-Wertz received 3,270 votes, and contender Deborah Wright had 3,267, according to the Board of Elections’ official results.

Wright said she was happy the board recounted the entire race. By law, it was obliged to recount only 5 percent.

“I have full confidence in the board,” Wright said.

Election-board chairwoman Luann Laakso said the recount was very well organized.

“It went smoothly with accurate counting,” she said.

Trebuchon-Wertz could not be reached for comment Wednesday evening.

At a special Board of Elections meeting Monday morning, members learned last week’s recanvassing of paper ballots cast in the Nov. 3 general election had delivered a new leader in the race. Trebuchon-Wertz, who had trailed by 24 votes before the recanvassing, held a two-vote lead over Wright, according to results.

More than 6,500 votes total were cast for the two candidates, who sought the third and final Ashtabula city school board seat.

Election-board members certified the results at Monday’s meeting, clearing the way for Wednesday’s recount. Because the margin was so thin, a recount was automatic, said Richard Hornstein, election-board director. Wednesday’s recount was more exhaustive, with every ballot cast in the school board race examined and hand-counted.

Duane Feher, deputy Board of Elections director, said any expenses accrued were necessary because the races were within one-half of 1 percent, generating automatic recounts. The expenses will be paid for with 2009 budget allowances, he said.

The operating levy in Windsor Township also was recounted Wednesday. It passed by two votes, according to the election board’s official results. Last week’s recanvass also had given the measure a two-vote victory, Hornstein said.
