Ashtabula man admits breaking into 30 vehicles

JEFFERSON — A 33-year-old Ashtabula man has admitted stealing from dozens of vehicles in a Saybrook Township neighborhood Monday night and early Tuesday morning, according to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies have charged Michael Robert Kucera, 2701 Prospect Ave. W., with theft and criminal trespass, according to a report. When questioned by deputies, Kucera admitted to having entered as many as 30 vehicles within a four-block area near the Ashtabula city limits, according to reports.

The incident began shortly before 2 a.m., when a Dunbar Avenue resident called to report a possible vehicle break-in, deputies said. A car alarm was activated, and a man could be seen fleeing the area, according to a report. Moments later, deputies caught up with a man later identified as Kucera at Dunbar Avenue and Route 20. Kucera’s pants pockets were bulging, and it was learned he was carrying loose change and other items, deputies said.

Kucera initially said he was blameless but then confessed when told footprints found at the scene of the break-in matched the shoes he was wearing, deputies said. Kucera said he walked up and down streets in the neighborhood, looking for vehicles that were unlocked.

He estimated he entered around 30 vehicles parked on several streets, including on Dunbar Avenue, Granger and Shepard roads, and West 59th Street. Kucera took change and other items, including a digital camera and flashlight.
