ASHTABULA — An adult and six children were transported to the hospital Wednesday night after a car crash on the city’s West Side.
City police and firefighters responded to a 10:17 p.m. call, reporting a vehicle hit a tree and caught fire at 916 W. 38th St., according to a firefighter’s report.
When safety forces arrived, they discovered a four-door 1994 Mercury Grand Marquis with heavy damage but no fire, Ashtabula police report.
Inside the vehicle were six children, ages 8 and under, who were not in car seats or wearing seat belts, and a 21-year-old female driver, who was pinned under the steering column, police and fire reports show.
On Thursday, the city solicitor was reviewing the case for possible charges of child endangering and driving while impaired, police said.
After firefighters removed the front and rear windshields, as well as the roof and dashboard of the vehicle Wednesday night, the driver was alert and oriented but refused to take a blood-alcohol test, said Ashtabula Police Sgt. John Koski and the Ashtabula Fire Department report.
All seven of the vehicle’s occupants were transported by Community Care Ambulance to Ashtabula County Medical Center. Firefighters said none of the children appeared to be injured seriously.
