GENEVA — Hang up the holly because the city of Geneva is getting ready for the holiday season with a new Christmas theme for the downtown square, assistant city manager Jennifer Brown said.
Santa will circle the city in the annual parade tonight and finish the evening at the Geneva Recreation Center.
This year, the city is portraying “Twas the Night Before Christmas” in store windows, off-street decorations and the annual parade, Brown said.
“The downtown looks charming,” she said. “From the clock in the square to the storefront windows to the street-side decorations — everything is charming.”
The clock is wearing a Santa hat and is decorated with large candies and even mannequins “all snug in a bed,” Brown said.
The Geneva High School industrial arts and art classes made and decorated wooden stockings that hang on city light posts. Styling on Broadway made the ribbons for the wreaths, and Central Hardware employees fixed some broken bulbs on the wreaths, Brown said.
Holiday music floats down Main Street and Broadway, courtesy of the Community Improvement Corp. The lights are provided by the Geneva Business Association, and the employees at the Geneva Recycling Center wrapped old boxes for use as decorations for the downtown, she said.
“Our holiday displays are truly a community effort,” Brown said.
Vintage and antique items unique to the Clement Moore poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas” will be displayed at Broadway Antiques, on loan from the collection of Holly Menzie.
Evening festivities begin with the annual parade at 7 and will lead to the recreation center, where children will have the opportunity to visit with Santa. Parents can bring their own cameras or purchase a picture of their children with Santa. Every child gets a candy cane, Brown said.
Horse-drawn carriage rides also will be available the hour before the parade and for an hour after the parade, Brown said.
“The parade is going to be especially big this year,” she said. “We have 32 exhibits in the parade, which makes this one of our biggest parades ever.”
Geneva businesses also will host a Holiday Block Party in the city this weekend. Luisa’s Mexican Grill and Victoria’s Country Corner will host the North Broadway Holiday Block Party 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The event will feature free samples, door prizes, a bake sale and specialty-item vendors at Luisa’s Mexican Grill, including the Pampered Chef, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Southern Living, Tastefully Simple, Marabella Make-up, Simply Home and Tupperware. Luisa’s will offer festive weekend specials, including mole poblano, enchiladas con mole and carnitas. Tarot card readings by Dee Pacheo also will be available.
At Victoria’s Country Corner, vendors include Royal Inca Alpaca clothing, Silpada Jewelry, Pure Romance, Lia Sophia Jewelry and Seader D’s Candies.
Victoria’s Country Corner will introduce several new items, including Our Own Candle Co., Wind and Willow Foods, and Aspen Mulling Spices.
