Port group to apply for grant to renovate former HHS band building

ASHTABULA — Imagine busloads of tourists flocking to the historic Ashtabula Harbor District, disembarking at a busy tourist center at Lake Avenue and Walnut Boulevard.

The Ashtabula Port Authority plans to apply for a $250,000 grant from the Community Development Corporation to renovate old Harbor High School’s band building, turning it into a multipurpose building, officials said Friday. The Port Authority would convert the remainder of the property to a park, officials said.

The City Port Authority bought the Lake Avenue-Walnut Boulevard property after the Ashtabula Area

City School Board razed old Harbor High School earlier this year. About six months ago, Chairman Ron Kister shared the Port Authority’s vision for the property with City Council as part of an update on the panel’s activities.

“Tour buses won’t come down Bridge Street now,” Kister said, noting the street is too narrow with no space to turn around safely.

“The building (former band room) is in very good condition. We believe it will make a wonderful tourist center,” he said. “It will really help out the Harbor.”

The school district agreed to leave the former band room — built in 1982 — standing, when the construction company demolished the high school. The property surrounding the band-room-turned-tourist-center would become a public park, Kister said. The Port Authority would own and maintain the tourist center, while the park would be turned over to the city park board, he said.
