Snow-free November is one for the books

At this time last year, Ashtabula County was groaning under the weight of heavy snow and ice.

What a difference a year makes.

Northeast Ohio has enjoyed an unseasonably mild November, which may rank as one of the warmest in recent memory. As a

result, the region hasn’t seen a measurable snowfall so far this month, a remarkable feat, said Ron Coursen, a National Weather Service observer in Ashtabula.

“The first time since 1998, when I began keeping weather records,” Coursen said Friday. “I remember because I was anxious to measure some snow.”

A few bits of slushy snow were mixed with raindrops Friday, but no significant accumulation was expected, according to forecasts.

The NWS in Cleveland is telling news agencies that this November could be the fourth-warmest in the past century. Temperatures have averaged around 50 degrees for the month, some six degrees warmer than normal, according to NWS.

This season is a dramatic departure from last year, Coursen said.

“We already had 27 inches of snow by this time (in 2008),” he said.

Snow and ice storms within a week of Thanksgiving 2008 already had caused two snow days for some local school districts.

The lake-shore area wound up with more than 130 inches of snow between November 2008 and the end of February, an above-normal amount, Coursen said.

“That’s way above normal,” he said. “We usually average around 90 inches.”

Fans of the fluffy stuff will continue to be disappointed, according to NWS forecasts. Snow may mix with rain in the county’s southern areas this morning, but accumulation is expected to be slight. High temperatures, meanwhile, are expected to approach the middle to high 40s for the next few days , keeping snow at bay, according to the weather agency.
