Bar, patrons, businesses provide food to 44 families
JEFFERSON — Forty-four families were blessed as boxes filled with the ingredients for a Thanksgiving dinner were given out Wednesday morning at Harassments Bar and Grill, located at 900 N. Market St.
“Even in this tough economic climate, our patrons, along with many businesses and individuals in our area, gave to make this food drive possible,” said Dawn Ondo, manager of the bar and grill.
“This is our way of giving back to the community. If it wasn’t for this community, we would not be in business,” Ondo said.
Harassments Bar and Grill, in conjunction with the Manna Food Pantry, a ministry of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, worked together to make many needy area families happy.
“Manna supplies us with the names, and we, along with our many sponsors, raise the money and necessary food donations to supply families with not only what they need for a Thanksgiving dinner, but also some extra items to carry them a little further down the road,” she said.
Ondo, Harassments’ owner Terry Schley and their many volunteer helpers put together the boxes, which will feed family groups numbering from one person to families of 10.
“This year we raised about $1,000 and did a lot of our shopping at Jefferson’s Golden Dawn, as well as in Ashtabula,” she said. “It was such a pleasure for us to shop locally.”
This year, Ondo had extra help from Dino and Kim Johnston, the owners of Mugs Restaurant in Jefferson.
“Dawn was talking to local business owners about donating, and I volunteered my husband and me to help pass out the boxes,” Kim Johnston said.
Even though it creates a hectic holiday for Ondo, she says the look on the families’ faces makes it all worthwhile.
“I couldn’t do it without the support of our sponsors,” she said.
Those sponsors included the Law Offices of Kathryn Riedel, Cutting Edge, Lenox Equipment, Mike’s Bikes, Custom Quality Collision, Capps Pizza, Brian’s Auto Repair, Family Insurance, Mugs Restaurant and Harassment’s patrons.
Harassments will be open today for those who would like company among friends, Ondo said.
