Pooch helps deputies find elderly man

SHEFFIELD TOWNSHIP — A dog helped authorities find its elderly owner when the man became lost in woods Sunday, according to Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department deputies.

The 87-year-old Sheffield Township man, who reportedly spent hours outside, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for exposure, deputies said.

People in the area of Gageville Monroe Road, east of Peebles Road, called the sheriff’s department at 7:41 p.m., to report hearing a man calling for help. Deputies arriving at the scene heard the sounds and began trying to pinpoint the man’s location, deputies said.

As one deputy was traveling down a well access road, a German shepherd appeared, ran toward the deputy’s cruiser and then began running ahead along the path. After an interval, the dog stopped, deputies said.

The deputy found the man nearby, leaning on an ax. The man said he entered the underbrush with the idea to chop wood, became disorientated, he told deputies. He man was cold but OK, deputies said.

The victim owns the dog that alerted the deputy, reports show. The man told deputies he has no family and no one knew he had entered the woods.
